## Most Requested Datasets

View all datasetsA single DAR may request multiple datasets; dataset-level counts therefore should not be summed to calculate the total number of unique DARs.

## Cumulative Unique DARs Approved

Cumulative number of unique DARs based on initial approval date. Select a year to filter the page.

## New Unique DARs Approved by Year

Number of DARs receiving initial approval during each calendar year. Renewals are excluded. Select a year to filter the page.

How these statistics are calculated **Unique DAR:** Each Data Access Request is counted once, based on its initial approval. Annual renewals are not counted as additional DARs.

**Initial approval date:** The date the DAR was initially approved. Year filters and trend charts use this date.

**Researcher:** A PI, or an internal collaborator named on the DAR when it was approved. Each person is counted once, even when they take part in several matching DARs or are the PI on one DAR and a collaborator on another. External collaborators, who work under their own institutions' agreements, are not counted.

**Active DAR:** The research project remains approved and authorized to use the requested data.

**Expired DAR:** The DAR's approval period has ended and the DAR has been neither renewed nor formally closed.

**Closed DAR:** The project has been closed, required data destruction has occurred, and continued data use is no longer authorized.

**PI institution:** The institution of the DAR’s principal investigator (PI), as recorded on the DAR itself, so it does not change if the PI later moves elsewhere. Institution counts, the institution filter and the project table use it.

**PI institution type:** Whether the PI’s institution is non-profit / academic or for-profit, as recorded on the DAR.

**Geography:** Geographic statistics are based on the country of the DAR PI’s institution. Collaborators may be located at additional institutions or in additional countries.

**Research use statement:** The approved description of how the investigator intends to use the requested data, shown on each DAR's detail page.

**Datasets:** A single DAR may request multiple datasets, so dataset-level counts should not be summed.

* Institution counts are based on the institution names recorded in approved DARs and may include minor naming variations, because institution names are not completely normalized.
