As part of NIH’s strengthened identity proofing requirements for accessing controlled-access data repositories (CADRs), we are introducing an important update to the login experience. This change is designed to enhance account security and ensure compliance with federal authentication standards (NOT-OD-25-159).

What to expect

Starting June 1, 2026, all users (PIs, Signing Officials, downloaders) will be prompted to complete the IAL2 (Identity Assurance Level 2) verification process upon logging into DSS. This requires identity verification through either Login.gov or ID.me. Once completed, you will need to link your eRA Commons ID to your chosen service. All entry into DSS will occur via the RAS (Researcher Auth Service) portal moving forward.
